What do Peter Hook (Joy Division, New Order), Mani (Stone Roses, Primal Scream), Andy Rourke (Smiths) and Gary Briggs (Haven) have in common? If you said that they are no longer part of the group called “Freebass”, you’d be correct. Back in 2005 and 2006 when I had the pleasure of DJing with all of the mentioned bass players (on separate occasions) they all spoke of this project. I remember Mani, in particular, saying “It’s all about getting the three of us (Hook, Mani, Rourke) in the same room, isn’t it?” This album has been a long time coming for those involved.
But, the best laid plans… Rourke moved to New York last year and Mani and Hook had a public spat (click here for a refresher) , marking the end of the Freebass project in advance of the debut album being released.
With all of the fuss over the names involved and the dissolution of the band, it’s easy to forget that there’s an album involved here that came out last month. How did it turn out? Hear some of it for yourself….
